The only other Chinese film in the competition, DONG Xinwen 董新文 and WU Gang 吳剛's action comedy No Smoking 禁止吸煙, is billed as Xinjiang Province's first Lunar New Year comedy. It was released in capital city Urumqi in January.
Lee CHATAMETIKOOL ลี ชาตะเมธีกุล, the regular editor of Apichatpong "Joe" WEERASETHAKUL อภิชาติพงศ์ วีระเศรษฐกุล, presents his directorial debut Concrete Clouds ภวังค์รัก, about two brothers meeting in Bangkok after their father's death.
Japan is represented by two films, KUBOTA Nao 久保田直's Homeland 家路 (pictured) and TSUTA Tetsuichiro 蔦哲一朗's The Tale of Iya 祖谷物語 −おくのひと−. And India by Indranil ROYCHOWDHURY's Phoring.
Three films — 10 Minutes, Concrete Clouds and Tales of Iya — are also the only non-Taiwan films from Asia competing in the Taipei Film Festival 台北電影節's New Talent Competition, held immediately after the Shanghai festival.
Shanghai's New Talent Award jury is chaired by South Korean director KANG Je-gyu 강제규 | 姜帝圭, who served on the main competition jury in 2005. He is joined by New Zealand director Vincent WARD, Filipino director Adolfo Borinaga ALIX Jr., Taiwan producer LEE Lieh 李烈 and Chinese actress YAN Bingyan 顏丙燕.
